Training, Safety Procedures and Expectations

All of our subcontractors' are 100% union trained, which includes mandatory OSHA training and certification.

"An accident is defined as an event that you did not plan". It is our experience that the majority of accidents are caused by carelessness but with proper training, awareness and well timed communication, most accidents can be avoided.

Each employee at Progress Construction receives a copy of our Safety Program and each is tested on safety fundamentals by our general superintendent. This includes all personnel, both field and office. This training is documented in writing and kept on file for future reference as may be required. The safety manual is fully comprehensive covering all typical construction situations from open trench work environments to fall protection. A complete copy of the Progress Construction Inc. safety manual is available, if requested.

At the project level each superintendent is responsible to administer site specific refresher training on an on going basis. All such training is mandatory and all sessions are documented in writing for both technical consistency and attendance. Our historical files of such documentation are certainly ready for an open book review and evaluation.

Prior to commencing a new project, the assigned project manager and superintendent conduct a pre-construction meeting with each subcontractor. This will normally take place on site; however, on an individual case basis it may be conducted at our corporate office at 11 South LaSalle Street, Chicago, IL. The first point of business at each meeting is safety. We set expectations. We empower. We review site specific situations. We show that we care and that we are unyielding when it comes to placing safety first. For each safety meeting conducted, we maintain a complete signed attendance list.

At the job site level, our superintendent conducts a similar meeting with all trades at project start up and individually with new additions as construction progresses. Each subcontractor is required to conduct weekly tool box safety talks with his/her own employees and submit a subject plan and signed attendance sheet to Progress' superintendent. Our superintendent maintains an on site record of all such training. If they do not comply, our project manager takes formal action via a dunning letter with the subcontractor's office representative. Normally that will suffice to gain attention to the issue. If it does not, Progress escalates its interests with the subcontractor. We maintain a "friendly but firm" attitude toward training and safety first compliance.
